چکیده

Northern Arabian Sea is one of the most biologically rich region in the North Indian ocean during winter season. In the present study I wish to investigate the the dynamics behind the enrichment of Chlorophyll-a at the above region using multi satellite observations. Ocean Color Monitor (OCM) imageries are used to identify these areas along the west coast of India during February 2000 & 2001 and the mechanisms that can upwell nutrients to sustain the bloom are investigated using sea surface temperature and winds. The variability of Ekman pumping velocity along the northeast Arabian sea is 0.5 3.0x10 m/s and the Ekman depth is 25 55m. Sea surface temperature was 1C cooler in 2001 winter. This increased cooling resulted in more intense convection and vertical mixing.

Carbon cycling in the northern Arabian Sea during the northeast monsoon: significance of salps

Winter cooling and mixing brings nutrients (nitrate and phosphate) to the surface waters over large parts of the northern Arabian Sea, but the rates of primary production as well as carbon export from the euphotic zone are not especially high during the northeast monsoon. A multi-disciplinary time-series study conducted over a period of 13 d around 21° N, 64° E during the northeast monsoon of 1...

Monthly variability in surface pCO2 and net air-sea CO2 flux in the Arabian Sea

[1] Recent studies on biogeochemical cycling of carbon in the Arabian Sea, by Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS), revealed that the Arabian Sea is a perennial source of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. The surface pCO2 is governed by physical processes such as water mass transports, upwelling and winter convective mixing, and associated biological processes. Hence surface pCO2 distribution ...

Estimation of Phytoplankton Responses to Hurricane Gonu over the Arabian Sea Based on Ocean Color Data

In this study the authors investigated phytoplankton variations in the Arabian Sea associated with Hurricane Gonu using remote-sensing data of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), sea surface temperature (SST) and winds. Additional data sets used for the study included the hurricane and Conductivity-Temperature-Depth data. Hurricane Gonu, presenting extremely powerful wind intensity, originated over the cent...

Short Communication: The first report on the occurrence of Dactyloptena peterseni (Nyström, 1887) (Dactylopteriformes; Dactylopteridae) in the northern Arabian Sea

The dactylopterid fishes are non-commercial fishes and occasionally caught as a by-catch during commercial trawling. Two specimens of Dactyloptena peterseni were collected during the survey of commercial trawl catch at Karachi fish harbor. This is the first report on the occurrence of Dactyloptena peterseni in the Pakistani waters. The present study gives the detail description of morphometric ...

Comparison of chlorophyll distributions in the northeastern Arabian Sea and southern Bay of Bengal using IRS-P4 Ocean Color Monitor data

Water masses of different temperature and salinity partially govern the distributions of chlorophyll concentration. In the present paper, chlorophyll concentration has been deduced over the northeastern Arabian Sea and the southern Bay of Bengal using Ocean Color Monitor (OCM) data onboard Indian Remote Sensing Series Polar satellite (IRS-P4). The chlorophyll concentration is found to be higher...
